Remembering Michael Strahan’s Contentious ‘Live With Kelly & Michael’ Exit, 10 Years Later
Kelly Ripa said ABC’s handling of Michael Strahan’s move to Good Morning America showed a lack of communication and respect in the workplace.
On May 13, 2016, Michael Strahan hosted his final episode of Live With Kelly & Michael, masking the behind-the-scenes tension that would haunt the show for a decade.
News of Strahan moving to Good Morning America broke on April 19, 2016, when Variety reported that Machiavellian Ben Sherwood, then president of the Disney/ABC Television Group, orchestrated the secret transition.
After learning of the shift, Ripa was a no-show on Live, returning the following week to emphasize that all people deserve "fair treatment in the workplace" and "respect."
In a 2019 interview with TIME, Strahan admitted his exit "could have been handled better" and revealed he and Ripa lost touch. "I haven't spoken to her in a long time," he said.
Disney consolidated its operations at 7 Hudson Square in Manhattan in 2025, bringing the former cohosts to the same workplace for the first time since his exit. The New York Post reported they now share the basement level.
