Man Wins Election Despite Telling Voters How Unqualified He Is
Rogers drew more than 100,000 views online and won 12,635 votes after turning self-mockery into a campaign theme, election results showed.
On Saturday, October 17, 2026, 33-year-old small business owner Brady Rogers won a seat on Kelowna City Council, securing 12,635 votes and finishing fourth among 37 candidates.
Rogers ran a campaign built on self-deprecating slogans like 'I barely want to do this' and 'Just trying to pay my rent,' initially finding the idea of running 'laughable' but feeling a 'sense of duty' to address local issues.
David Black, an associate professor at Royal Roads University, described the campaign as 'sincere satire' with policy attached, noting Rogers focused on serious issues like housing, transit, and taxation.
Following his electoral success, Rogers noted the public response has been 'overwhelmingly positive'; he will begin a four-year term on council starting next week with training for the city of around 167,000.
Rogers believes younger voices are crucial for council and hopes to 'do real work' improving the city, viewing government as a tool for the people that can be changed when systems stop working.
