Regional Search and Rescue teams unit to assist North Okanagan wildfire evacuations
Search crews cleared Okanagan Lake for water bombers and later delivered evacuation notices as winds worsened and two wildfires expanded, officials said.
- On Saturday, Aug. 1, VSAR boat crews deployed onto Okanagan Lake to clear "looky-loos out of the way" so water bombers and helicopters could safely scoop water during the Bradley Creek Wildfire in the North Okanagan.
- Personnel shifted to delivering evacuation notices across expanding alert zones, receiving mutual aid support from Central Okanagan Search, Shuswap Search, and Kamloops Search to cover vast terrain efficiently.
- Coralie Nairn explained that as winds intensified, the team switched to rescuing people and pets, loading two passengers, a large dog, a bird, and a bearded dragon onto their boat.
- Multiple skimmer runs were aborted due to encroaching watercraft, an outcome Nairn noted brought back difficult memories from the White Rock Lake fire in 2021.
- All emergency crews, pilots, and volunteers working to restore normalcy received gratitude from VSAR, which stated it is "absolutely critical to be efficient, but thorough" with evacuation notices.
