Refugio Reyes Rivas was born on September 2, 1862, in the ranchería of La Sauceda, Zacatecas. He studied until the third year of primary school in Guadeloupe, Zacatecas. At the age of 14 he was hired as a mason to work on the works of the chapel of Naples, in the same entity.
