Reds pitcher Rhett Lowder faces hitters in simulated game, and rehab assignment could be next
The rookie right-hander is on the injured list with shoulder pain and could make a one-start rehab outing for Triple-A Louisville next week.
Cincinnati Reds starter Rhett Lowder threw 45 pitches Wednesday at Citi Field against teammates including outfielder Will Benson, advancing his recovery from right shoulder injury.
Lowder's injury came after he exited his May 7 start against the Chicago Cubs in the fourth inning with right shoulder pain, leading to placement on the 15-day injured list retroactive to May 10.
The 24-year-old rookie, selected seventh overall by Cincinnati in the 2023 draft from Wake Forest, compiled a 1.17 ERA across six starts in August 2024 but has posted a 5.40 ERA in eight starts this season.
Cincinnati manager Terry Francona did not rule out Lowder returning to the rotation after one minor league rehabilitation start, emphasizing that getting him healthy remains the priority.
Francona noted Lowder was out only two or three days, suggesting the injury was not severe and positioning him for a swift return if his Triple-A Louisville assignment at Memphis goes smoothly.
