Reds Not Bringing Back Pitching Coach Johnson, Who Took Leave of Absence, in 2027
Rosecrans said Johnson’s departure would add another offseason decision as the Reds try to stabilize a pitching staff hit by injuries.
On Thursday, Cincinnati Reds president of baseball operations Nick Krall announced that longtime pitching coach Derek Johnson will not return in 2027 following his personal leave of absence since June.
Since joining the organization ahead of the 2019 season, Johnson served as both pitching coach and director of pitching, maintaining a 4.22 staff ERA with the Reds during his tenure.
After Johnson began his leave in June, assistant pitching coach Matt Tracy and bullpen coach Oscar Martin assumed game-day duties while only one starter, Chase Burns, finished 2026 with a winning record.
"We wish Derek and his family the best," Krall said in a statement, adding the organization has launched an immediate search for a new pitching coach for the 2027 season.
Reds pitcher Emilio Pagan emphasized the team must improve execution across all facets of the game, making the search for a new pitching leader a priority for the upcoming offseason.
