Feds Announce $2.1m Investment in Alberta's Skilled Trades Workforce
The funding will help more than 1,000 young Canadians gain apprenticeship training and certification in Red Seal trades.
- On Wednesday, the federal government announced $2.1 million in additional funding for The Educational Partnership Foundation to expand its Trades Careers program in Calgary. The Honourable John Zerucelli, Secretary of State , unveiled the investment at a press conference.
- The Trades Careers program supports over 1,000 young Canadians pursuing Red Seal certification through a Registered Apprenticeship Program in Alberta and British Columbia. New funding brings total project investment to nearly $5.7 million.
- This funding aligns with the government's $6 billion Team Canada Strong plan to recruit 80,000 to 100,000 new trades workers by 2033. Efforts include an additional $2 billion for bilateral agreements with provinces and territories.
- The government is investing an additional $225 million into the Union Training and Innovation Program to help union-run training centres upgrade facilities and expand capacity. This supports the projected need for more than 1.4 million trades workers by 2033.
- "Investing in skilled trades means investing in Alberta's future," said Corey Hogan, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources. The initiative strengthens the workforce needed to build homes and infrastructure across the province.
