Alberta's Contentious New Riding Boundary Map to Be Presented in Legislature
The new 91-riding map leaves Red Deer unchanged while redrawing 32 other ridings and adding four seats, officials said.
On Monday, November 2, 2026, the Independent Advisory Committee released a new electoral boundary map confirming Red Deer will continue to be represented by two MLAs in the next provincial election.
Premier Danielle Smith's government rejected a previous report and ordered a new advisory panel to redraw boundaries, expanding the number of ridings to 91 from 87 to address earlier configuration concerns.
NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi accused the United Conservatives of gerrymandering to gain an unfair advantage, specifically citing plans to split Lethbridge's two ridings into four districts stretching into rural areas.
Alberta Chief Electoral Officer Gordon McClure warned he is running out of time to prepare for the October 18, 2027, polling day, while the NDP announced plans to challenge the new ridings in court.
The legislature is expected to debate the proposals later this week, even as Justice Minister Mickey Amery insists the electoral agency must finalize preparations within 11 months to meet the scheduled election timeline.
