Real Madrid loses case at CAS over fans targeting Pep Guardiola with homophobic chant
CAS judges said the chant was severe discrimination and upheld UEFA’s 30,000-euro fine and two-year probation order.
- The Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected Real Madrid's appeal against a UEFA fine imposed after fans directed homophobic chants at Pep Guardiola during a Champions League match against Manchester City.
- During a 3-1 victory last year, supporters chanted that Guardiola was "infected with HIV/AIDS," prompting UEFA to impose a 30,000 euro fine and a two-year probation order closing part of the stadium.
- Madrid lawyers argued the chants were "humorous, exaggerated" satire, but CAS ruled the abuse was "of a severe discriminatory nature & to be considered as far more serious and damaging than acceptable satire and banter."
- UEFA noted the fine represented just 0.03% of Madrid's Champions League prize money, which exceeded 100 million euros , amid a separate, years-long Super League dispute.
- The Fare Network provided video evidence that supported the ruling, and Madrid officials have since met with fan groups to ensure Guardiola was not targeted for abuse.
