RCBC, DOTr, and LRTA bring global EMV transit standards to LRT-2; PISO fare promo rolled out

The open-loop system lets commuters tap bank cards, mobile wallets and QR payments, with RCBC offering a cashback promo for eligible cardholders.

  • On Monday, July 13, the Light Rail Transit Line 2 launched contactless payments across all 13 stations, allowing passengers to use Visa, Mastercard, GCash QR, and Google Pay instead of separate Beep cards.
  • The Department of Transportation , Light Rail Transit Authority , Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation , and Visa developed this interoperable 'open-loop' platform to modernize transit as part of the government's broader effort to introduce modern fare collection systems.
  • Serving more than 160,000 passengers daily—over 58.7 million annually—the system streamlines fare collection. Visa estimates that open-loop contactless payments can increase public transport ridership by as much as 10 percent.
  • RCBC is offering a PISO Fare Cashback Promo from July 13 to July 31 for eligible cardholders. Officials noted the system brings the Philippines closer to transit standards found in Singapore and Hong Kong.
  • Technical preparations for LRT-1 are underway for this year, as Bangko Sentral Deputy Governor Mamerto Tangonan stated the LRT-2 pilot provides the data and lessons needed to scale the system nationwide.
