Rare Royal Mint Blue Peter 50p coin sells for more than 300 times face value
The Royal Mint coin drew 15 bids as collectors chased a 2009 issue with just 19,722 minted.
A rare Olympic Games Blue Peter 50p coin sold for £160 after drawing 15 bids on eBay. The London 2012 Olympic Games edition marks the first of 29 official Olympic 50p designs released.
Released by the Royal Mint in 2009, only 19,722 copies were produced. Its low mintage and exclusive distribution through commemorative presentation packs make surviving examples particularly elusive for collectors.
The reverse features an athlete leaping over a high jump bar, designed by nine-year-old Blue Peter competition winner Florence Jackson. With a diameter of 27.5mm, the coin displays the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
While many standard versions entered circulation for other Olympic series, the original 2009 issue remains one of the most sought-after modern British coins. Royal Mint mintage figures confirm these designs rank among the rarest in circulation.
Anyone checking their loose change is urged to keep an eye out for these scarce editions. Sellers often turn to competitive online bidding to test market demand, with well-preserved specimens securing higher prices.
