Rare Royal Mint 50p coin selling for more than £200 - how to spot
Coin experts say rare 50p pieces can fetch hundreds of pounds, with one Blue Peter design selling for £200 after 21 bids on eBay.
A rare Blue Peter 50p coin, designed by Blue Peter competition winner Florence Jackson to celebrate the London 2012 Olympics, fetched £200 on eBay after 21 bids.
Originally sold for £1.09, the coin's value has soared due to its rarity and Olympic connection, while its 27.5mm diameter provides ample space for decorative pictures.
Other examples have previously sold for as much as £286, with the Royal Mint listing coins like Olympic Goalball 50p among the top 10 most valuable based on low mintage figures.
Coin experts advise the public to check old 50p pieces carefully, as rare editions like the Blue Peter coin may be worth far more than face value.
The 50p piece has become the most collected coin in the UK, with its unique heptagonal shape used to celebrate major events over the past 50 years of British history.
