Rare monkey gives birth months after major foot surgery
Masaya, a 15-year-old roloway monkey, gave birth weeks after surgery saved her foot and preserved her fertility amid severe wild population decline, conservationists said.
- Masaya, a 15-year-old Roloway monkey, gave birth to daughter Lagertha at Chester Zoo just months after pioneering surgery saved her foot from amputation.
- Veterinary teams at the University of Liverpool Small Animal Teaching Hospital removed a golf-ball sized mass from her foot, saving the limb with only one toe amputated during the procedure.
- "This was the last chance to save Masaya's foot," said Rachel Burrow, vet and lecturer at the University of Liverpool, noting the successful surgery enabled normal behaviors including holding offspring.
- Born two weeks ago, Lagertha is "already curious about the roloway monkey habitat," according to primate keeper Zoe Edwards, who reported Masaya is "parenting magnificently."
- Roloway monkeys are critically endangered, with fewer than 2,000 remaining in West Africa due to poaching and habitat loss, making Chester Zoo one of only two UK locations where they survive.
