Rapist Ralph Carr’s Grim New Life at The Map With Tom Silvagni
Carr’s lawyers say public identification has worsened his mental health and are seeking a temporary stay while he appeals the convictions.
On Monday, convicted rapist Ralph Carr appeared at the County Court of Victoria for a pre-sentence hearing, sporting a shaved head and grey prison-issued tracksuit instead of his recognizable black wig and tailored suits.
A Victorian County Court jury found Carr guilty last month of two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault over an attack against a former employee in March 2023.
Defence barrister Dermot Dann KC argued the attacks lasted "one second," while his client describes his current incarceration as "a living hell" amid significant mental health concerns.
Legal counsel is preparing a rare application to stay Carr's sentence pending appeal, with the defence team hoping he could be acquitted and freed on bail if successful.
Following the lifting of a suppression order on August 3, Dann cited public identification as the "single greatest factor exacerbating risk" to his client's mental wellbeing and career prospects.
