Rangers goalie Joonas Korpisalo is week to week with a lower-body injury, AP source says
Joonas Korpisalo is week-to-week with a lower-body injury, and Dylan Garand returns to the NHL roster as New York’s backup.
On Thursday, New York Rangers backup goaltender Joonas Korpisalo was placed on injured reserve with a lower-body injury. The 32-year-old is considered week-to-week.
Recalled from the American Hockey League's Hartford Wolf Pack, 24-year-old Dylan Garand fills the roster vacancy. Garand cleared waivers earlier in the week before rejoining the organization.
Korpisalo was acquired from the Boston Bruins this offseason for a $3 million annual salary. It remains unclear exactly when the injury occurred, as he has not played a game this season.
A back-to-back schedule begins with Thursday's home opener against the Tampa Bay Lightning and Friday's game at the Detroit Red Wings. Garand could start the second game in Michigan.
Starting in Tuesday's 3-0 loss at Boston, Igor Shesterkin remains the primary option in net. The team will depend on Shesterkin during this period while adjusting to Korpisalo's temporary absence.
