South Africa’s President Booked Off From Public Engagements over Ill Health
The presidency said Ramaphosa was advised to rest after the BRICS summit and asked ministers to cover scheduled events.
The Presidency confirmed on Wednesday that South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has been booked off from public engagements due to ill health following his return from the BRICS Summit in New Delhi.
Medical teams advised Ramaphosa to rest and recover following his recent travel; he remains fully in charge of government operations and has not designated an acting president during this period.
Deputy President Paul Mashatile remains on extended medical leave following a "minor medical procedure," with South Africa's executive branch managing a double health blow; Mashatile said his "recovery is progressing well."
Ramaphosa has asked Ministers to represent him at scheduled public engagements where possible, with Foreign affairs minister Ronald Lamola leading South Africa's delegation to this year's United Nations General Assembly.
Lamola arrives at the United Nations General Assembly amid renewed diplomatic tensions, as foreign officials recently imposed visa restrictions on some South Africans citing alleged race-based discrimination, a claim South Africa rejects.
