Up to 120mm of Rain Expected in Parts of Vancouver Island as Storm Nears B.C.
Environment Canada expects 80 to 120 millimetres of rain, with some areas seeing 150 millimetres and possible localized flooding.
Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning for North, West, and Inland Vancouver Island beginning Thursday afternoon, describing the system as the "first potent storm" expected to drench the region through Friday.
Classified as a "yellow alert"—the least severe level in Environment Canada's new color-coded system—the storm marks the first in a series of fall weather systems battering The British Columbia coast into next week.
Rainfall totals of 80 to 120 millimetres are expected across much of the Island, with up to 150 millimetres over higher terrain, particularly from Tofino northwards to Port Alice, Zeballos, Tahsis, and Gold River.
The rain will peak around midnight, with rates potentially exceeding 10 millimetres per hour through Friday morning, prompting Environment Canada to recommend residents avoid rivers, creeks, and culverts during the warning.
Meanwhile, the North and Central Coast regions face strong southeasterly winds of 90 kilometres per hour, with gusts reaching 110 kilometres per hour, while the Bella Coola area will see overlapping systems with rainfall up to 60 millimetres.
