Railways Approves ₹440 Crore Third Line Project to Boost Freight Capacity on South Eastern Railway

The project is expected to add 3.52 million tonnes a year of freight capacity and ease heavy congestion on a key corridor, Railways said.

  • On Thursday, Indian Railways approved a ₹440 crore project to construct a 14.52-km third railway line between Nimpura West Outer Cabin and Midnapur in West Bengal under South Eastern Railway, aiming to ease congestion on a high-utilisation corridor.
  • Operating at 115.71% line capacity utilisation, the Nimpura-Midnapur section is part of the High Utilisation Network carrying heavy passenger and freight traffic, with coal and cement sidings creating near-saturation of capacity over years.
  • Upon completion, the project is expected to support an additional 3.52 million tonnes per annum of freight, strengthening movement of coal, iron ore, steel and cement—commodities the route currently transports at around 23.8 million tonnes annually.
  • The third line will substantially augment line capacity and improve operational flexibility, reducing bottlenecks to enhance both passenger and freight services, according to SCR General Manager Sanjay Kumar Srivastava.
  • Indian Railways' expansion reflects its continued focus on high-density routes, complemented by the recently completed 203-km Kazipet-Balharshah tripling project in Telangana and Maharashtra, which facilitates seamless movement on the busy Grand Trunk route linking northern and southern India.
