East Midlands Railway Warns of Heatwave Disruption and Midday Service Suspensions
EMR urged passengers to make only essential trips as temperatures could reach 30C and regional services are suspended from 12pm for safety.
East Midlands Railway and Great Western Railway have introduced service amendments and reduced speeds this week in response to forecasted extreme temperatures threatening rail infrastructure.
The UK entered its third heatwave in as many months on Monday, prompting the UK Health Security Agency to issue heat-health alerts across England through Sunday, July 12.
Philippa Cresswell, customer experience director at EMR, said "The hot weather means we'll need to make some temporary changes to our services to keep the railway operating safely." She urged passengers to travel before midday.
Regional services between Nottingham and Worksop, and Nottingham and Leicester, will be suspended from 12pm on Wednesday, with EMR plans for Thursday and Friday remaining under review.
The Met Office warned England could experience "tropical nights" later this week where temperatures will not fall below 20C, with forecasters anticipating high humidity and isolated thunderstorms by the weekend.
