Raiders HC clears up QB situation amid calls to bench Kirk Cousins for Fernando Mendoza
Las Vegas Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak confirmed Monday that Kirk Cousins will remain the starting quarterback for the Week 8 matchup against the New York Jets, ending speculation regarding rookie Fernando Mendoza.
Kubiak's decision follows Sunday's 35-21 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, which extended the Raiders' losing streak to four games and dropped their record to 3-4.
Despite the team's struggles, Cousins leads the NFL with 16 touchdown passes and 1,877 passing yards, finishing the Rams game with 295 passing yards, a 59.1% completion rate, and a 94.4 passer rating.
"There's no controversy," Kubiak said, reaffirming support for the 38-year-old veteran, though the team plans to develop Mendoza without a timeline for his first start.
Following the Jets game, the Raiders face matchups against the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks, with the organization maintaining a long-term plan for Mendoza but no current timeline.
