Plymouth-based Royal Navy ship shadows Russian destroyer

  • On Sunday, March 16, HMS Somerset, supported by a Merlin helicopter from 814 Naval Air Squadron, began shadowing the Russian task group's escort, Severomorsk, south of Portsmouth as the group passed through the English Channel and North Sea.
  • This operation was the third time in six weeks that the Royal Navy has shadowed Russian task groups returning from Syria, with the aim of monitoring the vessels.
  • The Russian task group, which included the Udaloy-class Severomorsk, landing ship RFN Alexander Shabalin, and transport ships MV Sparta IV and MV Siyanie Severa, was carrying cargo back from the Eastern Mediterranean and heading towards the Baltic Sea.
  • Other Royal Navy assets, including minehunter HMS Cattistock, RFA Tidesurge, Merlin and Wildcat helicopters, and RAF P8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft from RAF Lossiemouth, were deployed to monitor and collect vital information on the Russian ships' movements.
  • Armed Forces Minister Luke Pollard expressed gratitude to the personnel involved and affirmed that "Russia should be in no doubt that the UK will defend our waters," emphasizing that national security and freedom of navigation are essential to the UK's economy and that there is strength in a coordinated NATO response.
