Mourners Gather for Rabbi Eli Schlanger's Funeral
Around 200 mourners joined the funeral procession from Bondi to Rookwood Cemetery, amid growing anger over government inaction on rising antisemitism, mourners said.
- On Wednesday, the funeral of Rabbi Eli Schlanger included about 200 family and friends processing from the Chabad of Bondi Synagogue to Rookwood General Cemetery with NSW Labor Premier Chris Minns attending.
- Schlanger was killed while handing out tefillin at Bondi on Sunday during his 18th Hanukkah festival, part of an attack that left 15 dead.
- Security forces watched as the coffin was lowered, while half a dozen correctional officers formed an honour guard led by Commander Michael Walters around the burial mound.
- One mourner, who asked to be called Alex, said 'We are very angry, we are very upset,' amid rising fury over perceived inaction on antisemitism, with Scott Morrison and David Littleproud attending and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese absent.
- The funeral marked the first day of seven days of mourning, and friends said they are supporting Rabbi Eli Schlanger's wife and helping care for the couple's two-month-old daughter, noting he was a father of five.
