JoAnna Mendoza wins Arizona House seat, flipping key district for Dems
Mendoza led Ciscomani 58% to 40% with 70% of votes counted, giving Democrats a seat shaped by economic concerns and military service.
Democratic congressional candidate JoAnna Mendoza defeated Republican Rep. Juan Ciscomani on Tuesday, flipping a closely watched House seat in Arizona's 6th Congressional District.
With 70 percent of votes counted, Decision Desk confirmed the victory at 10:12 p.m. Eastern time, showing Mendoza leading Ciscomani 58 to 40 percent.
Mendoza spent nearly two decades in the military, serving two years in the Navy and 17 in the Marine Corps, where she served under the discriminatory "don't ask, don't tell" policy.
During her campaign, Mendoza emphasized protecting Medicaid and restoring funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children.
Mendoza told The Advocate she wants to "make politics boring again" by delivering results for constituents, joining Congress as an openly LGBTQ representative.
