Sweden Marks King and Queen's 50th Anniversary
Thousands lined Stockholm’s streets as the royal couple began a day of services, a barge ride and concerts for their golden jubilee.
- On Saturday, June 13, crowds packed the streets of Stockholm to celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, cheering as the couple paraded through the capital.
- The popular royal couple married four years after the then Crown Prince met Silvia Sommerlath, a German-born commoner working as an interpreter at the 1972 Munich Olympics.
- Kicking off the day with a Te Deum thanksgiving service in the Royal Chapel, the King and Queen, aged 80 and 82, later boarded the royal barge Vasaorden.
- In an interview ahead of the jubilee, the Queen joked there are "There are so many things!" that irritate her about the King, while he described her as "Unbelievably considerate."
- A recent poll by the Novus institute found 69 per cent of Swedes believe the King represents the country well, as he continues his 52 years reign as the longest-reigning Swedish monarch.
