Queen Elizabeth II's most precious family heirloom worn by Prince Harry secures royal first
- The Royal Collection Trust announced the first public display of the 185-year-old christening robe worn by 62 royal babies in Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style at The King's Gallery, Buckingham Palace, opening April 10.
- Designed by Janet Sutherland, the robe dates to around 185 years ago and was first worn in 1841 by Princess Victoria, then passed down to Princess Elizabeth in 1926 and Prince William in 1982.
- Made of cream Spitalfields silk and Honiton lace from Devon, the robe is naturally fragile, so textile conservationists completed over 100 hours of conservation work and the late Queen commissioned an exact replica in 2004.
- The display includes the bonnet, silk satin shawl, sash, bows and ribbons, and the gown is part of approximately 200 items in the largest-ever display of the late Queen's clothes.
- Conservators found a note on the robe's box instructing washing in natural spring water, which helped explain its condition, while Caroline de Guitaut called it a key example of British craftsmanship.
