Quebec Appeals the Ruling that a Child May Have More than Two Parents

The Government of Quebec has decided to appeal the Court of Appeal's decision that Act 40 abolishing school boards contravenes section 23 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Quebec objected to a child legally having more than two parents. The Minister of Justice would appeal a recent judgment on the matter.

In April, the Superior Court found it discriminatory to have no more than two names on a birth certificate.

There is no question for Quebec to legally recognize as parents the three members of a loving trio.

Quebec does not accept the decision of the Superior Court to grant legal recognition to more than two parents for the same child. For the Minister of Justice, Simon Jolin-Barrette, the traditional civilist approach adopted by his government, which provides for the legal recognition of only two parents to one child, remains the best option to protect the child.
