Quebec man dead after being found in rip current off Florida beach
The man was caught in a rip current about 150 yards offshore; lifeguard staffing was limited with the nearest tower over 1.5 miles away, officials said.
- At about 12:17 p.m. Friday, Dec. 26, lifeguards responded to a reported drowning after a 44-year-old man from Quebec was caught in a rip current off Ormond Beach, Florida.
- Amid limited lifeguard staffing, the Volusia Watermen's Association said lifeguard patrol units were pulled from neighboring zones and the closest open lifeguard tower was more than 1.5 miles away.
- Once on the scene, lifeguards found three people in the water; two individuals reached shore while the third man found about 150 yards offshore was transferred to Ormond Beach Fire and Volusia County EMS for emergency transport to a local hospital.
- A.J. Miller confirmed that soft sand delayed moving the victim to the ambulance, so CPR continued as he was transported in the responding unit bed, and he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the local hospital, VCBS said.
- CPR was immediately initiated once the man was brought to land, responders said, and the Volusia Watermen's Association emphasized the importance of swimming near a lifeguard.
