Qantas Warns of Airfare Price Hike as Ongoing High Fuel Costs Slam Airline
On Friday, Qantas Airways announced it will raise airfares and cut domestic flying by 4% in early 2027 to tackle soaring fuel costs stemming from Middle East conflict.
Qantas's fuel bill for the final six months of 2026 is now expected to reach $3.75 billion, up from a $3.6 billion forecast, as Trump administration strikes in the Middle East disrupted oil supplies.
With Brent crude oil now exceeding $US100 a barrel, Qantas cancelled a $150 million share buyback and hedged about 85 per cent of its annual fuel bill to preserve capital.
The airline reported that "International demand across Qantas and Jetstar remains strong, supported by customers redirecting travel away from the Middle East," while corporate travel volumes stay stable.
Qantas stated that "Fuel prices are expected to remain elevated through financial year 2027," as it advances "Project Sunrise," targeting non-stop Sydney-to-London flights using Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft by 2028.
