PWHL to choose San Jose as its 4th expansion market, AP sources say
The league will grow to 12 teams and strengthen its Western footprint as it pursues geographic diversity and shorter travel, Amy Scheer said.
On Friday, The PWHL selected San Jose, California, as its fourth and final expansion market, bringing the league to 12 teams. Two anonymous sources confirmed the development, which The Hockey News first reported.
Las Vegas, Seattle, and Vancouver joined the league last year, while Detroit and Hamilton, Ontario, were added as new franchises over the past two weeks.
Executive vice president of business operations Amy Scheer stated the league prioritizes geographic diversity and reduced travel time, with the new team likely playing at the SAP Center, home to the NHL's Sharks.
The league now maintains a four-team foothold in the West, complementing its original six franchises in Boston, New York, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, and Minnesota.
Scheer said the league is considering splitting into two conferences or divisions to manage its larger structure and streamline operations as expansion continues.
