Putin tells army to press on with campaign to take southern Ukrainian region
Russian forces control about 75% of Zaporizhzhia region and captured 6,640 sq km in Ukraine in 2025, with December advances being the fastest of the year.
- On Dec 29, President Vladimir Putin told his army to press on with a campaign to take full control of the Zaporizhzhia region, giving the order at a televised Kremlin meeting with top commanders and Andrei Belousov, Russia's defence minister.
- Military briefings showed large territorial captures as General Valery Gerasimov reported Russian armed forces took 6,640 sq km including 334 villages in 2025 with advances along nearly the entire front while Kyiv focused on defence.
- Teplinsky told Putin that 'Frontline units are located about 15 kilometres from the southern outskirts of the city of Zaporizhzhia,' and said forces were getting closer to the city with a pre-war population of over 700,000.
- Mr Putin said in the near future it is necessary to continue the offensive together with the East grouping to liberate Zaporizhzhia, while Moscow controls around 75 per cent of the wider Zaporizhzhia region claimed in 2022.
- Reuters noted it could not independently verify battlefield reports, but commanders said they were managing to accomplish the tasks facing the grouping.
