Puget Sound Energy electric, natural gas rates go up
Puget Sound Energy’s rates rose 12% for electric and 7% for natural gas customers to cover Climate Commitment Act compliance and clean energy investments.
- On Dec. 31, the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission approved Puget Sound Energy's rate requests, with rates taking effect December 31, 2021, and about a 12% electric and 7% gas increase.
- To recover costs, PSE sought to comply with the Climate Commitment Act and to fund expanded clean energy, reliability upgrades, and low-income bill assistance.
- Among affected customers, PSE's scale means the average electric customer using 800 kWh will pay about $17 more monthly, and natural gas customers will see an increase of about $6.50.
- Commission staff reviewed and recommended approval, confirming Washington Department of Ecology no-cost emission allowances do not cover all CCA compliance costs Puget Sound Energy must purchase.
- Changing its electricity resource portfolio, PSE is meeting Clean Energy Transformation Act requirements while the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission regulates investor-owned electric utilities.
