Coyote Bites Child in Markham, Police Issue Public Safety Alert
Police said a 5- to 6-year-old was bitten in the head as officials reported several recent coyote incidents in the area.
York Regional Police warned the public on Sunday of another coyote attack in Markham, Ont., the second incident in four days, after a child was attacked around 7:30 p.m. at Bruce Boyd Parkette.
The Sunday attack follows a coyote bite to a 16-year-old girl last week near Mingay and Bur Oak avenues, part of an escalating pattern of incidents in York Region.
Coyote encounters have been concentrated across nine parks near McCowan Road and 16th Avenue; the child attacked Sunday, between five and six years old, sustained minor head injuries and was hospitalized.
Officers attempted to track the coyote but lost it when the animal retreated into nearby woods, while police urged residents to call immediately if they spot aggressive or sick-appearing wildlife.
Police recommend continued caution for residents, pedestrians, and pet owners in parks near McCowan Road and 16th Avenue as The City of Markham monitors the situation across affected green spaces.
