Man who killed 'much-loved' grandfather outside pub jailed for 10 years
Jurors found Nathan Gothard guilty of manslaughter after prosecutors said his menacing behavior led to the fatal punch outside a pub.
On Friday, Nathan Gothard was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the manslaughter of 66-year-old David Darke at Leicester Crown Court.
The fatal incident occurred last year at the Crown Inn in Appleby Magna, where Gothard punched Darke after the grandfather intervened during a dispute.
Judge William Harbage KC told Gothard, "You punched him so hard that he was unconscious before he had hit the ground," condemning the "senseless and unnecessary act."
Darke's relatives stated, "Our family has finally seen the person responsible for Dave's death sentenced," describing the "much-loved" father as an "inspiration to his family."
Detective Inspector Kevin Hames of the East Midlands Special Operations Unit noted Gothard "had every opportunity to walk away," while Darke's organ donation gave four people "a chance of life.
