Province funds wildfire prevention, creates local jobs

The funding will support fuel breaks, prescribed burns and other treatments that officials say will protect communities and create rural forest jobs.

  • On Monday, June 8, the British Columbia government announced it is fulfilling the third year of its financial commitment to the Forest Enhancement Society of BC , providing $20 million for 60 forest projects.
  • Covering 2026 and 2027, the funding targets wildfire prevention by creating fuel breaks, removing residual fuels, carrying out prescribed burns, and making improvements to egress routes across the province.
  • The Woodlot Product Development Council receives the largest allotment of over $1.4 million for woodlot treatments, while Logan Lake's community forest corporation secures nearly $1.1 million for fuel management.
  • B.C. Minister of Forests Ravi Parmar stated the investment means "local logs for local mills to create local jobs," while FESBC executive director Jason Fisher praised the resulting healthier ecosystems.
  • Beyond wildfire resilience, the province noted these projects support rural forest-sector jobs, restore wildlife habitat, reduce greenhouse emissions, and recover valuable fibre for British Columbians.
