Proton Data Breach Observatory to Expose Infosec Cover-Ups
Proton's new platform tracks over 1,500 data breach incidents and hundreds of billions of exposed records to enhance transparency and early detection of cyberattacks.
- Launched on Thursday, Proton unveiled the Data Breach Observatory to scour the Dark Web for breaches companies haven't acknowledged and plans near-real-time updates to inform the public.
- Many organisations delay or avoid breach disclosure, leaving public awareness incomplete, Proton said, noting small and medium businesses are particularly vulnerable and least able to absorb attacks.
- Data show 71% of breaches hit firms with under 250 employees, with companies of 10-249 staff accounting for 48% of incidents.
- Proton says the Observatory will offer `previously unobtainable transparency`, partnering with US-based Constella Intelligence to validate dark-web listings and contact affected companies.
- Excluding aggregated infostealer dumps, the Observatory focuses on single-organization breaches to avoid inflated counts, and Proton said it may contain some false positives but can alert earlier than Have I Been Pwned.
