German Protests Turn Violent as Activists Clash with Police
Tens of thousands marched for better education and lower living costs, while police said extremists tried to exploit the movement and shops were looted in Frankfurt.
On Saturday, tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered across Germany in Gen Z-led protests demanding better education funding and lower living costs; turnout reached 18,000, significantly lower than the 36,000 organisers initially anticipated.
The Gen Z-led group organized demonstrations to oppose compulsory military service and secure better education support; spokesperson Lina Friedrich stated, "We are here today to fight for peace and freedom."
Violent disturbances erupted in Frankfurt and Hamburg on Saturday as masked groups looted stores and erected burning barricades; police reported 11 injured in Hamburg while Frankfurt police warned, "Violent disturbances are continuing."
Authorities arrested 200 people across multiple cities, including 120 in Hamburg and 56 in Berlin, as Police Chief Johannes Hermanns said extremists had infiltrated the peaceful gathering.
Questions persist regarding movement leadership after the student organization BSK distanced itself from the initiative; BSK plans to hold a separate day of protest on November 20.
