Driver Granted Bail After Wallsend Crash
The court cited six nights in custody as it granted bail, while Samarasinghe faces nine charges over the crash that injured 10 fans.
Newcastle Local Court granted bail to Indika Bambrick Samarasinghe on Friday, October 9, 2026, after the 18-year-old spent six nights in custody following the crash that injured 10 Newcastle Knights supporters.
The incident occurred on Saturday, October 3, when Samarasinghe allegedly lost control of his BMW convertible at a roundabout on Link Road in Wallsend, striking 10 fans farewelling the Newcastle Knights team bus before the NRL grand final.
Judge Trevor Khan deemed the nine charges "extraordinarily serious," noting Samarasinghe had an added obligation to drive carefully in a 90 speed zone with thousands of people present; prosecutors alleged "speeding was a previous issue" for the P-plater.
Samarasinghe must live under house arrest at his Randwick home, report daily to Randwick Police Station, remain barred from operating vehicles, and stay within 20 kilometres of Newcastle only for court appearances.
Three victims remain in stable condition in hospital, while Samarasinghe faces nine charges including dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm; his matter returns to court later this month without pleas yet entered.
