Flavio Bolsonaro leaves Brazil for US after election defeat: Report
An ally told Reuters he left after his runoff defeat, as Brazil’s Supreme Court had ordered him to surrender his passports.
On Tuesday, Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro left for the United States after failing to surrender his passports by a court-ordered deadline, according to an ally who confirmed the departure to Reuters.
Supreme Federal Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes barred Bolsonaro from leaving Brazil on Monday, citing ongoing money laundering and corruption investigations and fearing he might follow his father's precedent of fleeing.
Federal Police canceled all passports after the Tuesday deadline lapsed, while Argentine authorities denied reports he crossed their border, stating they have 'no record of Flavio Bolsonaro entering' the country.
While an ally confirmed his departure, his current location remains unverified as aides declined to comment. Earlier, brother Eduardo Bolsonaro dismissed reports of fleeing as a 'lie.'
The senator's parliamentary immunity expires January 31, 2027, exposing him to prosecution in multiple cases including allegations of laundering approximately $12 million to finance a film about his father.
Flavio Bolsonaro, who lost the presidential election in Brazil, refused to comply with a Supreme Court order to surrender his passports. Allegedly, Bolsonaro left Brazil and went to the United States. The US Embassy in Brazil and Bolsonaro's lawyer have not responded to these allegations.
Flavio Bolsonaro, according to media reports, fled Brazil after being defeated in the presidential election. He has not handed over a canceled passport and plans to apply for asylum in the United States
