Private mission launches to extend life of out-of-gas communication satellites
The mission will service three commercial satellites and could add years of operational life with robotic refueling and maneuvering.
- On Tuesday, Northrop Grumman launched its Mission Robotic Vehicle and three Mission Extension Pods aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. Over the next year, the spacecraft will move to geosynchronous orbit to service three commercial satellites with refueling.
- The MRV builds upon SpaceLogistics' Mission Extension Vehicles launched in 2019 and 2020, addressing a critical challenge: hundreds of military, government and commercial satellites reside approximately 22,000 miles above Earth in geosynchronous orbit, yet the distance prevents inspection and repairs.
- Equipped with two robotic arms built by the Naval Research Laboratory and funded by DARPA, the spacecraft have already docked with three commercial communications satellites and carry a Space Force-approved Passive Refueling Module enabling on-orbit refueling and debris removal.
- Director of NRL Naval Center of Space Technology Bernard Kelm said the effort created "a rapid, scalable pathway to field next-generation space logistics for both national security and civil space missions." CEO Kathy Warden stated the company defers deployment decisions to the U.S. government.
- Northrop Grumman plans to launch additional Mission Extension Pods while the MRV remains in orbit to install them, scaling the servicing capability. The mission aligns with President Donald Trump's $175 billion Golden Dome space-based defense system announced last year.
