PRIVACY ALERT: Starr Insurance, Inc. Under Investigation for Data Breach of Records
The breach may have exposed names, Social Security numbers and medical information, and the company did not disclose it until nearly two months later.
On Monday, San Francisco-based Schubert Jonckheer & Kolbe LLP announced an investigation into a data breach at Community Health Systems Inc, which serves patients in San Bernardino, Riverside, and San Diego Counties.
Unauthorized actors accessed the Community Health Systems network on February 28, 2026; the ransomware group Akira claimed responsibility in April 2026 for exfiltrating 15 gigabytes of data.
Potentially compromised sensitive information includes Social Security numbers, medical records, and payment card details. Community Health Systems did not publicly disclose the breach until April 29, 2026.
The firm is simultaneously investigating a separate data breach at Starr Insurance, a Pennsylvania-based agency, where affected individuals were not notified of the November 2025 incident until May 6, 2026.
Failure to notify the public promptly may violate federal or state laws, potentially entitling victims to money damages and injunctions requiring changes to cybersecurity practices.
