Prison operator Sodexo and Lothian Health Board admit criminal charges after death of inmate with COVID

The case is believed to be the first successful prosecution of its kind in the United Kingdom after the Crown Office reviewed about 6,000 coronavirus deaths.

  • On Friday, Sodexo and Lothian Health Board admitted criminal charges for failing to ensure duties under health and safety legislation following prisoner Calum Inglis's 2021 Covid-19 death.
  • Inglis, who was unvaccinated and asthmatic, contracted Covid-19 on October 12, 2021, at HMP Addiewell. He died 12 days later in his cell without sufficient support from prison officers or healthcare staff.
  • This legal action is the first successful prosecution for a Covid-19-related death in the United Kingdom. Lawyers for the family claimed Inglis was not seen by a nurse while coughing up blood during his final 12 days.
  • Solicitor Aamer Anwar said the treatment left Inglis "worse than an animal," while Sheriff Julius Komorowski expressed condolences, stating the 34-year-old died in "awful circumstances."
  • The Crown Office investigated around 6,000 pandemic-related deaths before pursuing this case. Proceedings are expected to continue at Edinburgh Sheriff Court in December as the family seeks further accountability.
