Prime Day Data Surprise: 9% More Clicks, 45% Less Consumer Spending — What Changed – Marketing Communication News

Summary
Amazon’s Prime Day generated significantly more traffic for retail brands in 2026 but delivered far less revenue – a striking reversal that reveals a fundamental shift in how consumers shop during major sales events and what they want from brands. According to a new benchmark report from impact.com, which analysed performance across 1,364 North American retail brands, clicks rose 9% year-over-year during the 4-day event. But transactions fell 25%, conversion rates dropped 31%, and consumer spending plummeted 45%. The gap between traffic and sales is widening, and it’s not because shoppers ran out of money. The most striking finding: the event’s biggest sales day didn’t happen during Prime Day at all. It happened nine days before it started. In 2025, orders peaked on Prime Day 3, inside the event window. In 2026, the peak shifted nearly two weeks earlier. Brands’ pre-event promotions appear to be pulling demand out of the sale window entirely, not building momentum toward it.

Prime Day Data Surprise: 9% More Clicks, 45% Less Consumer Spending — What Changed – Marketing Communication News

This is consistent with a broader pattern in the data: consumers are now taking nearly two additional days to research before buying (11 days vs. 9.37 days last year). They’re browsing more, converting less, and spending smaller amounts when they do buy. Loyalty and rewards programs significantly grew their share of transactions (from 45% to 58%). Network partners remained the second-largest contributor in both years, though their share declined. What this really shows is that loyalty members came back. Deal hunters didn’t. Repeat-customer channels held up far better than discovery-driven ones. Cristy Garcia, CMO of impact.com, sees opportunity in the shift: “This data shows consumers are being more intentional about their purchases. The brands that win are the ones who meet them where they’re actually making decisions—not just during the sale, but in the research phase. That means extending campaigns beyond the four-day event window and building stronger relationships with the publishers, review sites, and creators whose recommendations show up in AI answer engines. It’s a more partnership-driven approach, and that’s where the real influence happens.” Urgency tactics alone don’t work anymore. What works is sustained presence and trusted voices.
