Six companies and two alliances cleared eligibility checks for seabed licences, and a formal call for bids is expected later this year.
- On Friday, The Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Energy Regulator identified six companies and two consortia qualified to bid on seabed licences for Canada's first offshore wind farms after a review process between October 2025 and January 2026.
- Applicants met rigorous financial, technical, legal, and social criteria to prove capability for offshore wind development, with qualified participants hailing from nine countries including Canada, China, and France; some opted to keep their status confidential.
- Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston stated the initial phase of the Wind West project is estimated to cost about $60 billion and produce five gigawatts of power by 2033, positioning the province as an energy leader.
- Provincial plans target 40 gigawatts of capacity by 2050, far exceeding the 2.4 gigawatts Nova Scotia needs, while Quebec and Massachusetts expressed interest in purchasing electricity that could supply 27 per cent of Canada's total demand.
- The regulator will issue a formal call for bids later this year, with all forthcoming submissions subject to federal and provincial ministerial reviews before approval.
