The term "living wage" does not mean the legally prescribed minimum wage, but rather the amount that should enable an employed person to cover real living expenses and have a decent life for themselves and their family.
The Constitution of the Republic of Croatia stipulates that "every employee has the right to an income that can ensure a free and dignified life for himself and his family," and how to turn this right into reality was the central question of the three conference workshops, according to the organizers.
Preliminary results for Croatia show that a person needs around 373 euros per month for a healthy diet, while the calculation of a dignified salary based on total living costs exceeds 3,000 euros.
New union: "A living wage is not an abstract ideal or privilege, but a right without which there is no dignified life. The existence of this right in constitutions, conventions and other documents is not enough – it must become a reality in the workplace."
