Trump suspends exemption for low-value imports under $800
UNITED STATES, JUL 30 – The executive order targets a surge from 134 million to 1.36 billion low-value shipments since 2015, aiming to stop synthetic opioid smuggling and unfair trade, the White House said.
Nitazenes, potent synthetic opioids, have caused hundreds of deaths in Europe, leading law enforcement to struggle with detection efforts, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.
President Donald Trump has intensified measures against fentanyl trafficking while declaring the opioid epidemic a top national security issue, citing the southern border as a primary entry for trafficking.
Vanda Felbab-Brown warns that large criminal groups could exacerbate the public health crisis through the rising supply of synthetic opioids, including nitazenes.
In Estonia, nitazenes have been linked to almost fifty percent of drug-induced deaths, reflecting how the drug market evolves faster than responses can keep up.
With the suspension of this exemption, packages will now be taxed at the same level as other products from the country of origin or at a specific rate depending on the type of product and its origin.
