Trump suspends exemption for low-value imports under $800
UNITED STATES, JUL 30 – The executive order targets a surge from 134 million to 1.36 billion low-value shipments since 2015, aiming to stop synthetic opioid smuggling and unfair trade, the White House said.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order ending the de minimis trade loophole for low-value packages shipped from all countries.
The order, effective August 29, will impose duties on imported goods worth $800 or less, according to the White House.
A federal trade court declined to block the de minimis ban despite a legal challenge from an auto parts retailer.
Officials stated that the volume of de minimis shipments has increased significantly, reaching 309 million units this fiscal year.
With the suspension of this exemption, packages will now be taxed at the same level as other products from the country of origin or at a specific rate depending on the type of product and its origin.
