Portuguese police clear Lisbon housing protest camp, make arrests
Police charged demonstrators and made several arrests as protesters demanded scrapping evictions reforms and rent cap changes.
On Oct 25, Portuguese police cleared a housing protest camp from Lisbon's Rossio Square in the early hours of Sunday, making several arrests after warning occupants to remove more than 100 tents.
Portugal is grappling with a 300,000-home shortfall nationwide, driving protesters to demand the government scrap a bill making evictions easier and ending rent caps on new leases.
Left Bloc lawmaker Fabian Figueiredo called the police action "completely disproportionate," while marcher Vitor Gomes, 21, said, "We have an obligation to fight for what we believe in."
Shortly after 2 a.m., dozens of officers with police dogs moved in on the camp after warning protesters to remove tents or face disobedience charges, with minor injuries reported.
The Lisbon protest follows similar demonstrations in Belgium, France, Italy, and Spain, reflecting a widening European trend as rising living costs squeeze households across the continent.
