According to Minister of Environment and Energy, algae represents increased costs for the municipalities and damages tourism. Azores, Algarve and Cascais are the most affected areas
The program, announced this Monday, September 21, is the National Strategy for the Management of the Invasive Macroalga, approved in July 2025, and results from the work of an interinstitutional group coordinated by the Portuguese Environment Agency, which brought together public administration agencies, local authorities, scientific institutions and other entities.
Satellite surveillance, sensors and new forms of removal integrate plane by 2030. Erasing algae is virtually impossible, admits the ministry.
The program provides satellite surveillance, underwater sensors, barriers and new methods of removal of Rugularpteryx okamurae between 2026 and 2030. Government content approves national plan to contain invasive macroalgae appears first in Barlavento.
