Portugal housing protesters return to squares, vow to press on
Organisers said more than 1,000 people gathered at each square as protesters renewed demands for rent caps and more public housing.
On Tuesday, thousands of activists returned to Lisbon's Rossio and Porto's Dom Joao squares, vowing to continue housing protests hours after police cleared camps and made 55 arrests before dawn.
Housing purchase prices and rents for new leases have more than doubled since 2017, fueling activists' demands for the government to withdraw legislation easing evictions and ending rent caps.
Debora Miranda, 41, a communications consultant, joined the Rossio square protest representing generations struggling with soaring costs. "If people don't feel at home, in every sense of the word, they can't move forward with their lives...enough is enough," she told Reuters.
The 55 detainees were released pending a court appearance on Wednesday, while a popular assembly in Lisbon voted to return to Rossio square and set up tents again.
Public Security Police superintendent Sergio Soares called the eviction "calm, proportionate and appropriate," while camp spokesperson Carla Valadao described it as "very aggressive," reflecting deep friction between authorities and demonstrators.
Thousands of people left the street on Saturday, in several cities in Portugal, to protest against the housing crisis and the lack of concrete measures by the government. The demonstrations took place after more than a week of protests, during which people installed tents in public spaces, EFE reports.
The protests aim to highlight the housing crisis in Portugal, which is characterized by rising property prices.
