Portal opens for $100 affordability payments for Albertans

Nearly 3.4 million adults can apply online, and eligible recipients will receive the non-taxable payment within two weeks, the government says.

  • On Canada Day, Alberta opened the application portal for a $100 energy rebate, allowing residents to claim funds for high living costs. Nearly 3.4 million adults are eligible for the provincial program.
  • Premier Danielle Smith announced the initiative to provide direct relief instead of reducing fuel taxes. Minister Jason Nixon stated the rebate provides 50 per cent more savings than fuel tax relief would have over three months.
  • Albertans receiving the Alberta Seniors Benefit, AISH, ADAP, and Income Support as of July 1 are automatically enrolled. Other applicants must have a household income of $225,000 or less and receive payments within 14 days of applying.
  • Residents can submit applications via the secure provincial portal until Sept. 2, with each adult required to apply separately to receive payment.
  • The rebate replaced fuel tax relief after West Texas Intermediate crude prices exceeded the US$90 threshold during the province's 20-day review period. Nixon said the government will weigh future rebates against the fuel tax program.
