Popular fireworks display axed amid drought fears and safety concerns
Organisers said the fireworks were cancelled as Essex faced drought, with England receiving about 7% of average rainfall in July, the Environment Agency said.
On Saturday, organizers of the Manningtree Town Regatta cancelled the 90th anniversary Regatta Fireworks due to drought conditions, though the Stour Sailing Club proceeded with sailing races and mud sports on the River Stour.
The Environment Agency declared Essex in drought following a prolonged period of high temperatures and very low rainfall, with July among England's driest on record at seven per cent of average rainfall.
Serious wildfires have plagued the county, including a recent blaze at Middlewick Ranges in Colchester over the weekend, marking the third drought in Essex in five years following similar events in 2022 and 2025.
Organisers hope to reschedule the display later in the year, expressing gratitude to Dynamic Fireworks for their understanding and flexibility in enabling the postponement.
Despite the absence of the traditional finale, the Regatta remained a popular fixture, drawing large crowds for sailing races and mud sports while celebrating the town's maritime heritage.
